Frequently Asked Questions
What is Cold Cap Therapy?
Cold Cap Therapy is a drug free and non-invasive technique of scalp cooling, proven to be successful in minimizing hair loss, reducing minor injury oedema (swelling) and when used as part of a healthy lifestyle may help to relieve the impact of migraine or headache symptoms and other trichology conditions.
Studies have shown that wearing a cold cap slows down the metabolic rate at which hair cells absorb nutrients or anything else in the blood system such as chemotherapy drugs. Further, the extremely cold cap temperature constricts the blood vessels leading to the hair follicles, reducing the amount of chemo drugs that reach the follicles while the caps are worn. As a result patients can save most of their hair (some thinning may occur). Of note, the drugs stay in the patient’s system far longer than the allotted time of cold capping, but the chemotherapy reaches the hair follicles when it is at a diluted strength.
How does it work?
Cold Cap Therapy involves applying a specially designed cap onto the head which then will cool the scalp. The caps will be switched on a carefully prescribed schedule to maintain the correct optimum temperature for approximately 50 minutes before chemotherapy treatment begins, during treatment, as well as 4 hours after.
